Dear David Letterman,
Thanks for officially helping to kill what used to be called "music." It's over. And I'm not talking about the "golden age" of music, which has long been over. I'm talking about music in general — what it is perceived to be, what actually constitutes music, and especially, what "live" music is. There's no doubt there are some talented new musicians out there, although they're mostly drowned out by EDM, Kanye's latest "artistic schtick," whatever that thing Skrillex does is called and the latest batch of new Lennons and Dylans on "American Idol," and "The Voice."
But last night you officially put that sick dog known as "music" down when your musical guest was "Hatsune Miku." Miku is the cartoon mascot for a Japanese software company. She's a video game character, projected onto your stage with mirrors. SHE'S NOT REAL, Dave. Remember when you had Talking Heads, REM, James Brown, Joe Strummer and Dylan on your show? But a "holographic pop star?" A "virtual Idol?" What the hell were you thinking, Dave? You're from the Woodstock generation! You had MILES DAVIS as a musical guest!
So thanks for that Dave...that was awesome. Because what we need to do is give kids more reasons to stare at their 3 inch device behind closed doors, rather than picking up a guitar and plugging in in their parent's basement. They can now stop looking up to the cartoon called The Kardashian's and focus on "music" — albeit a cartoon. Reality TV replaced reality and "American Idol" replaced music. Now, we've reached the final frontier, as a cartoon musical "guest" takes the spot on your show historically reserved for "real" musicians.
I can hear your producer now: "I know we had booked the new MilesDavisJohnLennonBobDylan, but we bumped them when we got a chance to have Scrappy Doo debut his new hip hop mashup! Have you heard it? It's dope!"
By the way, did you know the translation of Hatsune Miku means (roughly) "sound of the future." Jesus, Dave...we're screwed....
Signed,
Music fans and musicians the world over
