Miles, Jimi and more...

Hot on the heels of the James Brown biopic “Get On Up!.” it looks like Hollywood is again mining the music landscape with some interesting current and upcoming projects.

Don Cheadle is behind Miles Ahead, an unconventional biopic focusing on the years 1975 to 1980, when Davis was in musical seclusion. Cheadle is both the director and star of the film, which was most recently previewed in the Sunday September 12 New York Times. The movie was at least partially crowdsourced by Cheadle on the site Indiegogo and  is currently in the early stages of shooting.

September 26 sees the opening in select cities of Jimi: All Is By My Side, from Academy Award-winning writer-director John Ridley (12 Years A Slave), The film stars OutKast’s Andre Benjamin (Andre 3000) as Jimi Hendrix, and features legendary session guitarist Waddy Wachtel as a music consultant.. The film covers the years of Hendrix's life from 1966-67, when the soon-to-be-superstar was scuffling as an unknown in the New York and London music scenes. 1967 would see Hendrix's breakout performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. The New York Times also previewed the flick and Rolling Stone featured photos from the set that can be seen here.

Lastly, there’s the fascinating-sounding documentary This Ain't No Mouse Music!, which opened last week in Bay area theaters.  The film profiles the Down Home Music Store in El Cerrito and it’s owner Chris Strachwitz, 83, who would later found Arhoolie Records. SF Gate calls him a “charming old crank” and a “ready raconteur.” You can read more about the movie here.

Finally, according to a  2013 piece in Rolling Stone, a slew of music biopics have gotten the green light, with films about Elton John, the Who's wild drummer Keith Moon and the 1970s Berlin collaborations between Iggy Pop and David Bowie all in the works.
