“Bowie@75” is the first entry into a gorgeous series of music books from publisher Motorbooks that is simply made for your coffee table. These hardcover books come in a slipcase and follow a formula: 75 career highlights, significant events and milestones are presented, including every Bowie studio album, family events, media brouhahas, and touchstones such as sex, drugs and…well…rock’n’roll! Sounds good, eh?
Each of the 75 “chapter's are only a couple of pages long and dotted with beautiful photography and other remarkable imagery. Chapter 01 is “Scream Like A Baby: Born in Brixton” and Chapter 75 is “Ashes To Ashes: Bowie Delivers Blackstar, Then Dies In New York” to close it out.
In between, there is a (one-page) chapter where Bowie “apologizes for statements on fascism (and) blames drugs, one each on his SNL and Johnny Carson appearances, and several on his Iggy Pop and Lou Reed associations. And there is so much more…easily digestable , fun, and informative. Aside from the hundreds of photos, there is a publicity shot printed out, and an incredible folded poster from a show in Osaka, Japan in 1973.
It is a very different take on rock biography books and a ton of fun to read, look at and take in…in any order you want, on any day or week you have some time. It is a worthy take on this Star Man and simply a great way to learn more about David Bowie!
